BUT I DON'T WANNA: An Ick-less Self-Promo Club for Writers

$299.00

There's a lot of pressure on writers to do all this promo stuff and it's scary, especially if you're not the type of person who tends to dance on TikTok. You got into this to write. And now you're supposed to be public in ways that can feel really uncomfortable — posting about yourself, building a platform, figuring out what your "brand" is. It can feel icky and isolating and like it has nothing to do with why you started writing in the first place.

This workshop is about stripping all of that back to the absolute basics and doing it together, with pals, in a way that actually feels like you.

Over 4 weeks on Zoom, we'll figure out what you actually need for self-promo (and ONLY what you need.) Some kind of web page or site (we'll talk about options at every tech comfort level). A place where new people can get to know you. A way to collect the email addresses of folks who are interested in your work. And a visual language with which you'll communicate your vibe to the world. That's it. The whole way through, we're going to keep things as ick-less and authentic as possible.

Each 90-minute session includes:

A little sip 'n' chat in which we learn about an aspect of self-promo with options for multiple tech comfort levels. Then we write together: web copy, scripts for little videos (don't worry!), Instagram captions, newsletter drafts. Each week, you'll come away with a little more promotional know-how, something to post, and the confidence to post it.

Who is this workshop for?

Writers who have work to share with the world but feel stuck, icky, or overwhelmed when it comes to promoting themselves. Maybe you have a book coming out and the idea of "building a platform" makes you want to crawl under your desk. Maybe you’re a new-ish writer who wants to get on top of this stuff before you pursue publishing. Maybe you've been writing for years and still don't have a website. This club is for anyone who wants to figure out how to talk about their work without feeling like a used car salesperson.

Who isn't this workshop for?

If you're already comfortable with self-promotion and have your systems figured out, this probably isn't for you. And if you're looking for a workshop focused more on craft or submissions, check out The Ol' Write 'n' Send instead. One other thing: my expertise is in the traditional publishing world, so if you're writing in a particular self-publishing niche, I might not be the best person to guide you — but if you're trad pub or trad pub curious, you're in the right place. (And if you've done promo before but hate doing it alone and want the support of a room full of pals — come on in.)

What will you come away with?

A clearer sense of what self-promo tools you actually need and which ones you can ignore. The beginnings of a web presence that feels like you. A plan for how to talk about your work. Plus actual content — written, scheduled, ready to go. And the knowledge that you don't have to do this alone.

Length: 4 weeks, 90 minutes per session on Zoom

Recordings: All sessions will be recorded and shared with participants, so if you miss a week, you won't fall behind.

Open to writers of all genres. My expertise is in traditional publishing, so the advice and strategies we cover will come from that world. Not sure if this is for you? Drop me a line at hello@jaclyn.ink.

Accessibility: I want this to be a space in which you can feel as comfy as possible in your body. Cameras are always optional. We take a break midway to stretch, get water, do whatever you need. Captions are on. The chat box is a totally valid way to participate — you never have to unmute or share aloud if that's not your thing. You'll never be put on the spot. Recordings go out after every session, and I share materials in advance when I can so you can preview at your own pace. If there's anything else I can do to support your access, please reach out.

Cost: $299 CAD. Afterpay available. If you're interested in seeking funding for this workshop through a grant, I'd be happy to write you a letter of acceptance for your application.
